Basic guide for traveling to India for the first time
May 10, 2024The capital of India, New Delhi, is located within the city of Delhi. This city is the most populated in India and one of the most populated in the world , with more than 18 million inhabitants. In this article we tell you the best things to see in New Delhi and Delhi so that you can organize yourself and know what to visit on your trip to India .
New Delhi is located south of Old Delhi, the ancient city . It was built during the Mughal Empire and is located on the lands that, in ancient times, were occupied by seven different cities.
Prior to New Delhi, Calcutta was the capital of the Raj, the government of the British Crown . However, in the past, Delhi had been a political and economic center of great importance for the country, so it was proposed to designate the capital in that city.
Now, let’s go with the best there is to see in Delhi, including the newest and the oldest part.
Red Fort
This fort was built by Emperor Shah Jahan to use as a royal residence when he moved the capital of his empire from Agra to Delhi. The construction of this building began in 1638 and was completed in 1648, during the time of the Mughal Empire.
It is one of the most impressive buildings to see in Delhi. Its wall is 6.5 kilometers long in total and with a height that ranges between 16 and 33 meters , depending on the area. The area where the wall is lowest is the one that borders the river, and the highest is the one that divides the land with the rest of the city.
Just by looking at it, you will already know why it received its name: the fort stands imposingly with the characteristic red of the sandstone with which it was built.
UNESCO declared it a World Heritage Site in 2007.
It has two access gates that are impressive: Delhi and Lahore. Inside the fort, you will find a bazaar called Chatta Chowk , with shops that will attract you to buy some souvenirs. If you go through the main door of the palace you will find a copy of Solomon’s throne , a gallery dedicated to musicians, pavilions that house the women’s chambers, the imperial rooms, the hamam and the Pearl Mosque , made of white marble.
Within the Red Fort grounds you will also find the Garden of Grant of Life . It has two water channels that join into a pool.

Gandhi was assassinated by members of far-right political groups in New Delhi on January 30, 1948. On the memorial you will see an inscription with his last words: “Hey, Rama!” . With them, Gandhi alluded to that Hindu God just before he died.

Qutb Complex – What to see in Delhi
The Qutb complex is made up of monuments and buildings (some are vestiges of what they once were) that are World Heritage Sites. This complex was created by the first Sultan of Delhi, Qutb-ud-din Aibak, who served in that role between 1206 and 1210. Over the years, it was expanded by subsequent rulers, including the British.
Probably the most famous construction in the complex is the Qutub minar . It is the tallest brick minaret in the world, with a height of approximately 73 meters , making it an impressive thing to see in Delhi.

The main building is the Akshardham Mandir , which has a height of 43 metres. It is built with pink Rajasthani stone, which symbolizes purity and peace, and with original marble from Italy . It is curious that no metal or concrete has been used to erect the structure. Only gold was included for decorative details.
On the walls of the Mandir you will see carvings of about 20,000 figures representing flowers, animals, artists, deities , and more. Likewise, under the central dome you will find a statue of Swaminarayan about 3.4 meters high. In turn, this statue is flanked by others of religious gurus.
In the complex there are different attractions to see, apart from the temple, with which you can learn about the history of India, art and the Hindu religion . There is also a musical fountain with light and sound shows, an exhibition hall and a large movie screen . In addition, you will walk through its enormous gardens , where you will see an artificial river that you can travel by boat.
